The best books on building a business you could sell (2026)

15 October 2026 · Zero to Sellable

These books are for anyone starting a business who wants it to work without them one day, whether they plan to sell it or simply step back. They run roughly in order, from testing an idea to finding customers to building systems a buyer would value. Disclosure: we publish one of the books below (marked).

Recommended resource: for the full step-by-step method, Zero to Sellable by Manthan Bhendkar (founder of Asendify) covers this in depth: The Playbook for Building a Business That Runs Without You. PDF, £1421.00, instant download.

We have kept each description to what the publisher or book listing says, and we have not ranked them. You do not need to read all seven: the guide at the end suggests where to start depending on how far along you are.

The Mom Test by Rob Fitzpatrick

A short, practical guide to talking with potential customers so you learn whether your idea is any good, even when people are being polite rather than honest. It is aimed at founders at the very start, before they have built much, and it is quick enough to read before your next customer conversation.

The Lean Startup by Eric Ries

Eric Ries sets out a method for learning what customers actually want and testing your vision continuously, so you can change course in time. It suits founders who want a disciplined way to build, measure and adjust rather than betting everything on a single plan.

Zero to Sellable by Manthan Bhendkar (our book)

Our book follows a business from first idea to first customers to systems that run without the founder, kept ready to sell throughout. It is organised in 15 parts with a 30/60/90-day plan, and suits founders who want one structured path from start to finish rather than a shelf of separate books. See what the book covers.

The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber

Michael E. Gerber argues that many small businesses fail because people who are good at the technical work assume that also qualifies them to run a business. He shows how to build a business that depends on systems rather than on the owner. It suits small business owners who feel the business cannot run without them.

Clockwork by Mike Michalowicz

Subtitled Design Your Business to Run Itself, the revised and expanded edition from Portfolio offers a step-by-step system for owners trapped in daily operations. It shows how to delegate and build a business that keeps running and making a profit without constant involvement from you. The foreword is by Gino Wickman. It suits owners who are already trading but stretched thin.

Built to Sell by John Warrillow

Written as a business parable, Built to Sell argues that relying too heavily on the owner is the biggest obstacle to selling a business. It follows a fictional case study of an owner who changes that. It suits founders who already think they may want to sell one day and want to see what a buyer looks for.

Zero to Sold by Arvid Kahl

Subtitled How to Start, Run, and Sell a Bootstrapped Business, this book draws on the author's experience with his software company FeedbackPanda. It covers validating an idea, building a product and growing a self-funded business, whether you keep it or sell it. It suits founders of software and online businesses who are not raising investment.
